Emergency Light Manufacturers Note – The delay options available on steel, wet locations and industrial emergency lights are designed to ensure exit lighting after a power outage but before normal lighting reaches full power.
Gas vapor lamps such as fluorescent lamps, metal halides, mercury vapor and high pressure sodium have a so-called “warm up time”. The warm-up time refers to the time required for the gas vapor lamp to reach full power or luminosity.
Most emergency lights are turned off when power is restored, but in a facility with a gas vapor lamp, lights from emergency lights are still needed after power is restored. Therefore, the time delay option allows the emergency light to be held for 15 minutes after the power is restored, while the gas vapor lamp can be preheated to full brightness.
